In an 11 minute address, President Donald Trump announced that he is suspending all travel between the U.S. and Europe for 30 days beginning Friday as he seeks to combat a viral pandemic.
Trump says the restrictions won’t apply to the United Kingdom and the U.S. will monitor the situation to determine if travel can be reopened earlier.
Trump says “we are marshaling all federal resources” of the government and private sector to protect the American people.
Congress has unveiled a multibillion-dollar aid package that is expected to be voted on by the House as soon as Thursday.
Trump also says he is talking to insurance companies to drop co-pays for coronavirus testing, instructing the Small Business Administration to provide capital and liquidity for firm’s impacts and economic loans with low-interest rates meant to help companies overcome financial hurdles caused by the virus.
“We are in this together,” says Trump. “We must put politics aside, stop the partisanship, and unify together as one nation and one family.”
The World Health Organization recognized the outbreak as a pandemic Wednesday. After emerging in China in late December, the virus has infected more than 115,000 people in 114 countries, killing more than 4,200.
