A nine-year-old young lady has submitted to suicide in the wake of being harassed by her fourth-grade classmates.
McKenzie Adams was found by her grandma in her Linden, Alabama, home after she hanged herself, the Tuscaloosa News announced. Relatives say she had been pestered since the start of the school year.
Relatives say McKenzie had exchanged to U.S. Jones Elementary School in Demopolis, Alabama, since she had been tormented at her school in Linden.
The girl’s mother told CBS news, ‘She told me that this one particular child was writing her nasty notes in class,’ McKenzie’s mother said. ‘It was just things you wouldn’t think a nine-year-old should know… Part of it could have been because she rode to school with a white family… And a lot of it was race, some of the student bullies would say to her ‘why you riding with white people you’re black, you’re ugly. You should just die”
McKenzie’s aunt, Eddwina Harris, also told the Tuscaloosa News about the racially-motivated taunting adding “She was being bullied the entire school year, with words such as ‘kill yourself,’ ‘you think you’re white because you ride with that white boy,’ ‘you ugly,’ ‘black b-tch,’ ‘just die”
McKenzie’s death underscores the importance of bully intervention in schools, along with the underscoring racial tensions that continue in the country. This tragedy might bring new attention to the very serious matter of youth suicide.
